There are several phrasal verbs that have more than one meaning. Let's have a look!



Go off



1. rings
The alarm goes off at 7.00 am

2. stopped working
The lights suddenly went off.

3. explode
The bomb went off. 


Put something on

1. wear
I put my best suit on.

2. turn/switch something on
He put the light on.

3. gained weight/became fatter
I put on a lot of weight last year.


Break down
1. damage/stop working
The car broke down.

2. started crying
Lisa broke down at the news.






Go down

1. dissappearing below the horizon
The sun is going down.

2. became lower
Prices went down by 10 percent.


Turn up

1. arrive
When did they turn up?

2. be found by chance
Look! My rings turned up!


Do something up



1. fasten
I can't do this zip up.


2. redecorating
They're doing the living room up.








Tie somebody up
1. tie somebody so that he couldn't move
They tied him up.

2. very busy
She's tied up at the moment.
